5 Tips to help You navigate your first film festival
I had the pleasure of attending this year’s 26th annual American Black Film Festival in Miami, Florida. As my first film festival, this experience did not disappoint.
I went on this trip with a very strategic mindset because it was a personal and professional growth opportunity. While I put a lot of preparation into this trip, there was still so much for me to learn as a first-time festival-goer.

1. Establish Trip Purpose
Having clear intentions will help you plan the best trip by eliminating unnecessary confusion and maximizing your time based on your needs.

Have a love for television and film? Are you interested in knowing more about the inner workings of the entertainment industry?

There are likely to be parties and other social events in collaboration with the festival, so make sure you secure tickets in advance.

Know that you won’t be able to attend every scheduled event. There are events scheduled for various conflicting times and locations, so it’d be physically impossible to be everywhere all at once.
YES, there is a schedule and the goal is to be in line and seated early BUT don’t be hard-pressed about events starting or ending on time.
Be prepared for the energy of the hosts/audience to lead great conversations beyond their stopping point. A lot of panels leave time for audience Q&As.
Be considerate of preparations and cleaning that’ll need to be done in-between tightly scheduled events sharing the same event space.
Be cognizant of the travel time between the theater or convention center locations. Factor this into the time you need to leave and your mode of transportation.
Prioritize your time.
Pro tip: If you can schedule transportation in advance, do so! Rideshare surges are bound to occur during large events.
Have backup plans. If you can’t make your reservation time* be sure you can quickly make changes to accommodate your new schedule
*Most restaurants provide a grace period anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes.
